The party uses every ounce of their brute strength, a hearty helping of cunning, and even ancient magics to keep themselves alive. Sickness, danger, and even love surprise them at every turn. Review: Tales of Ever

Title: Tales of Ever (Volumes 1-6)
Author: Jen Wylie
Synopsis: A few months ago, I was a normal girl. Life sucked, and just like everyone else, I took the simple things for granted. At least until I got this new power, a "gift" mom called it. Apparently, I'm a firestarter. I didn't want to be. I didn't ask to be. It would be cool if it wasn't so dangerous and I knew how to control it. When an uncle I'd never heard of showed up to take care of me after my mom died, I should have been grateful. As it turned out, my whole family isn't normal and more than a little bit crazy. I thought things couldn't get any worse. I was wrong. They banished me to Ever.
My Review:

Jen Wylie´s narrative style is magical. She is able to transport you to Ever through her wickedly detailed writing. She keeps doing what she does best, creating wonderful and unforgettable stories.

As always, her characters are a master piece, they are complex, believable and inspiring. The trio of characters is formed by a brave and powerful heroine (Misha), a loyal best friend who ends up being something more (Jadus), and a fearless and fierce protector (Shade). Misha is the nucleus of the group while the boys are focused on her.
The book is set in Ever, a dangerous fantasy world that works as a kind of character because of its importance along the story. Ever is a prison, not the typical world full of rainbows and happiness, everyone there has been condemned to an existence of fighting trying to survive the dangerous world. Usually people don´t survive for very long periods but Misha is lucky enough to meet  Jadus on her first day in Ever and they share and instant connection forming a bond of friendship.

I am so happy that Jen decided to compile all the volumes in one book because I know wouldn´t have been able to wait for the next one. At the end of every tale you are left wanting more because of the tension she creates. There are some huge cliffhangers between volumes that left speechless, I almost had a heart attack at the beginning of volume 3, I have to admit that I cried a lot in that part. She is able to turn everything around in a couple of lines. She uses tension and twists so perfectly, there are some books from other authors where you know what is going to happen because they are so predictable but Jen always leave me breathless. Every time I read one of her books is like riding a rollercoaster of emotions and full of surprises while reading them and when you finish the book you are left wanting more.
Jen creates addictive stories, and before reading Tales of Ever I was obsessed with her writing but now my obsession has definitely grown up to further levels.  So yes, Tales of Ever is a must read suitable for a wide range of people because it doesn´t matter how old or young you are. Jen Wylie´s Tales of Ever is going to cast a spell on you and you won´t be able to stop reading it.
I would love to read more about Ever, to get to know more about Jadus, Misha and Shade. I also think it would be awesome if she narrated other characters stories set in Ever since it is a big world and we are left with some unresolved questions at the end of the book.

EXCERPT:
Her eyes opened to darkness.
She wasn't surprised. When bad things happened and you finally opened your eyes it was always dark wasn't it? Because otherwise when you woke up you wouldn't be scared, not right away, not until you remembered. Yet in darkness nothing else could be seen but the memories of what had happened, it didn't matter if you opened your eyes or kept them squeezed closed.
What happened…
She closed her eyes again, not against the memories, but the sudden tears and choking sobs. Still, she tried to notremember, but her head hurt. All of her hurt, but her head hurt the worst. She'd been hit by something, very hard. She had no trouble remembering the pain. She remembered falling to the ground, her brothers screaming her name over the insane loudness of the fighting and everything fading to nothing as darkness claimed her.
She sucked in a deep breath. The fighting. Yes, the city had been attacked. The walls had been breached. There had been fighting in the streets. She had been fighting. Her brothers had been trying to get her out. They had been so close. Had they?
She shifted and froze, terror creeping up her throat and choking her at the same time until nothing but a strangled gurgle came out.
They had not.
She knew because she felt the cold metal shackles around each wrist, felt the weight of the chain between them. The same fetters bound her ankles. Dirty straw prickled her cheek and the other smells of her surroundings overcame her. They overwhelmed her and made her gag. The rank scents of piss, shit and vomit almost covered the stale reek of sweat and the tang of salt.
Salt.
She'd thought her head had just been spinning, but no, everything moved, lurching and swaying. She was at sea.
At sea in chains meant only one thing. The rumors had been true. The Gelanians had allied with the Franuan Slavers. Beneath the combined attack, Kingsport had fallen and the Frans had taken their cut, citizens to sell as slaves. She was a slave.
Well that sucks.
The idea terrified her, and left her cold and shaking. Squeezing her eyes closed, she fought to push away the horrifying images suddenly assaulting her. Breathing slowly helped a little. The shaking stopped and finally she could breathe again.
She opened her eyes, straining them against the darkness. Had night fallen? Could that be why it was so dark? Her eyes slowly adjusted until she could make out vague shapes; the bars of the cell in the ships hold and darker shapes of people sitting before her in the small cell.
She concentrated, squinting her eyes and counting. Six others shared the cell. Her brothers? "Paul?" The creak of the ship and the murmurs, curses, and sobs of the other captives in the hold almost drowned out her small voice.
"Boy's awake," one of the shapes said. Definitely not one of her brothers.
She stiffened. They'd called her boy. Even after all she'd been through, it was quite a blow to her self-esteem. She frowned in confusion for a moment, until she remembered. Her brothers had dressed her in their old clothes, old bits of armor that sort of fit. They'd even hacked off her long hair…
She cursed them under her breath again for that. Then she almost smiled, remembering Sammy's face when he'd done it. Her brothers were such morons. They always had been. Yet they'd been stuck with raising her, and what did they know of girls? Her mother had died when she was four, and losing her hadn't been easy on any of them.
Father had been a regiment Commander and away a lot. They'd all managed to take care of her somehow, the younger of her brothers watching over her until eventually they'd all joined the army. But she'd been twelve by the time the youngest of them had enlisted. She'd been able to take care of the house while they served their time on the border. They didn't worry about her much. The army wives had helped, keeping an eye on her for them.
However, father had died two years ago at Demet's Pass. It had been hard, losing him. Harder than when mother had died because she hadn't been old enough then to know what it meant. Not seeing him at the head of their big old table, with his gentle smile, had been tough on all of them. It still was. It had been harder this past spring when her brothers had all ridden out again. Because death had become something real, she knew they might not come back.
She was fifteen now. Not really a child anymore. So she had faked a smile and waved goodbye to them all when really fear had made her want to scream instead. They had all come home, but with an enemy army at their heels. They'd been afraid then, afraid for her. They knew things she didn't, things like what would happen to a young girl if the city fell. However, she wasn't a woman yet, not in appearance at any rate. Tall and gangly with no figure whatsoever. No wonder she could pass for a boy.
"Boy."
The man who had spoken before broke her thoughts. She must have been hit in the head hard for her mind to wander back into the past. She managed to croak an incoherent sound indicating she'd heard him.
"You alive over there?"
"Yes," she lied and waited. No one else spoke. No one came rushing to her side. Panic quickened her breath as fear sped her heart. Her brothers weren't here. If they had been they'd have harassed everyone to find out where she was. At least… they weren't on this boat. Unfortunately, the slavers had a whole fleet. They must be on another boat. She had to believe that. She closed her eyes tightly again. Yes, they'd been placed on another boat.
Because if they weren't then they were all dead.

REVIEW: Flashy Fiction & Other Insane Tales 1&2

To the quiet ones, the trodden on, the kids in the hall The wolves in sheep's clothing, fooling them all. To the Goth, the dark, and the utterly strange The bizarre, the mutants, and the strangely deranged To the clinically insane and those not yet diagnosed Even un-medicated, you understand us the most This Flashy combo's for you An anthology of the strange, bizarre, and just plain weird. In Volume 1 find Zombies, vampires, ghosts, and ...crickets? If you dare, keep reading Volume 2 for Unicorns, zombies, devils, dark whispers, teddy bears, and ...fireflies? Try a taste of writing from two very different fantasy authors. Flash fiction stories are super short and perfect for when you 'just have a minute'.

MY REVIEW:

When I started reading Flashy Fiction & Other Insane Tales I didn´t know quite well what to expect. From the cover I thought it was going to be a collection of horror stories and it is true there are some creepy ones, but mainly there are insane tales, as the title perfectly points out.

I won´t compare their writings because each of them is unique and I would really, really love to read more collaborations between them.

I am a HUGE FAN of Jen´s work and writing so from the very beginning I knew I was going to love her stories. Echoes of Darkness was my favourite short story, and now I want to read The Untouchable Echo to know more. As always, Jen's writing is powerful, descriptive and lyrical at the same time.

Before this collection of short stories I haven´t heard about Sean Hayden and what a wonderful author I have been missing. Now I NEED to read some of his novels because if he has been able to create mysterious and funny novels in a bunch of pages such as The Day I Got Caught or And You Think Your Job Sucks to name some, I would love to read and know what he can do with a whole book length. I had A LOT of fun reading Sean´s stories, he has a really peculiar sense of humor that had me gaping and laughing at the more unexpected moments. And the whole idea of twitter/ facebook competition was awesome!

The short explanations that came with every short story where really useful to know more about each story and about the authors. It was amazing to really see the difference between their writing when they are the character and when they are being themselves, I don´t know if I have explained it good.
I also felt the difference between the 2 different parts. I liked the 1st one because of the craziness of each story, while the second one was more creepy and I loved that through their writing I could feel that they were even more attuned (don´t know if this word is the proper one).

Flashy Fiction & Other Insane Tales is a funny and fast reading that sends good vibrations while you are reading. It also blends Jen´s descriptive, lyrical and absorbing style with Sean´s unexpected, sassy and powerful narrative.

The day has finally come! Welcome to the Indie-Credible Event with the wonderful author Jen Wylie! =D First of all, I want to thank the girls from Little Read Riding Hood and Creative Deeds Reads for pairing us with Jen because thanks to them I´ve been able to read some EPIC books and meet such a wonderful author. We have been doing a warming up week for the event because she deserves it, here are the links:

Now I want to introduce Jen Wylie. She resides in rural Ontario, Canada with her  two boys, Australian shepherd and a disagreeable amount of wildlife. In a cosmic twist of fate she dislikes the snow and cold.
Before settling down to raise a family, she attained a BA from Queens University and worked in retail and sales. Thanks to her mother she acquired a love of books at an early age and began writing in public school. She constantly has stories floating around in her head, and finds it amazing most people don’t. Jennifer writes various forms of fantasy, both novels and short stories.

That is the official bio,but I want to tell you what I learn of Jen in this past month. She is an indie-credible author because she has created a lot of wonderful short stories and novels. She is a really caring, hard working and lovely person. She has been really patient and helpful with us. We would love to meet her in person one day because she has became on of my favourite authors. With her latest novels Broken Aro and Broken Prince she made me believe that love is the most powerful magic ever; that friendship and family and forever; that no matter how bad things are if you have people that care for you, you can get better. Basically, she made me believe in magic again.

You can contact with Jen by her:

Here is the interview we did to her =)

Interview
We are so excited to be hosting our first author interview with Jen Wylie.

- Do you speak any other language other than English? Which one would you like to learn?
I speak a little bit of French (being Canadian we take it in school until Gr. 9) and also a little bit of German (from my father) I would love to learn to speak German fluently. Another language I'd love to learn one day is Gaelic.

- What historical character would you meet if you could?
Oh, this is a hard one. Hmmm. I think Joan of Arc would be a pretty interesting person to meet. Another that comes to mind is Da Vinci.

- Favourite place/city in the world?
You're making me think today! I'm quite partial to Chicago, IL for personal reasons J I'd also have to say home, because I'm quite a homebody. Otherwise, anywhere with a beach and fruity drinks J

- Something that inspires you?
Music! Not only the words in the lyrics, but also the feelings different songs make me feel. One small phrase can set off my brain to write an entire novel J

- What authors/books made you want to be a writer?
Before I even hit my teen years my mother introduced me to fantasy novels. I devoroured books by authors such as Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey and David Eddings. As I grew a bit older, Michelle Sagara became one of my favorites.

- What time period would you like to travel to if you had the chance?
Another tough question. I'm thinking back in the times of ancient Rome/Greece. They had such interesting architecture and lives.

- Favourite childhood movie?
The Princess Bride (its's my favorite one of all time)

- Ebooks o paper books?
I do prefer paper books, but no longer have the room (or the money) for them. They have become a rare treat. Mostly I read ebooks on my phone.

- Is there anything you can tell us about your next book?
My current project is book three in The Broken Ones. I'm super thrilled how well book 2, Broken Prince, did with its release this June. I've been getting quite a few emails and messages from readers wanting to know if there will be more, and of course the answer is yes. There will be at least one more book, possibly two. Book three (I haven't picked a title yet, it will be Broken…something) starts off where Broken Prince ended. Arowyn and her boys will encounter new trials and adventures and meet new friends and foes. Some questions not answered in book 2 will be dealt with in the next book. The major story arc is of course the prophecy of healing the Fey. There will be more on her relationship with the boys. Damon will make an appearance again be quite troublesome. As for what else might happen, I’m not sure yet… the story is creating itself as I write.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. It was a pleasure and an honor =)

Thank you so much for having me. It's been a pleasure! ~hugs and rainbows to all~

¡Me estáis haciendo pensar!
