REVIEW: Witchstruck

WitchstruckTítulo: Witchstruck (The Tudor Witch Triology #1)
Autor: Victoria Lamb
Editorial: Harlequin Teen

WitchstruckTitle: Witchstruck (The Tudor Witch Triology #1)
Author: Victoria Lamb
Editorial: Harlequin Teen
Release Date in U.S.A: September 24th 2013
Synopsis: If she sink, she be no witch and shall be drowned.
If she float, she be a witch and must be hanged.
Meg Lytton has always known she is different—that she bears a dark and powerful gift. But in 1554 England, in service at Woodstock Palace to the banished Tudor princess Elizabeth, it has never been more dangerous to practise witchcraft. Meg knows she must guard her secret carefully from the many suspicious eyes watching over the princess and her companions. One wrong move could mean her life, and the life of Elizabeth, rightful heir to the English throne.

With witchfinder Marcus Dent determined to have Meg's hand in marriage, and Meg's own family conspiring against the English queen, there isn't a single person Meg can trust. Certainly not the enigmatic young Spanish priest Alejandro de Castillo, despite her undeniable feelings. But when all the world turns against her, Meg must open her heart to a dangerous choice.

Opinion: I requested the book through Netgalley because the cover seemed very nice and because I've always been interested in witchcraft and  the Tudor times, so I could not resist reading both things together.
The book is narrated from Meg´s point of view, the protagonist of the story. I liked Meg as a protagonist, but I would have liked to know a little more about her.

The narrative pace is a bit slow and I think the author needed to do a little historical research. Because I knew that history period and  the exact dates because I had to study the Tudor but for any other reader that is very little information. Once the action begins the book moves very fast.
I liked that it incorporates Spanish characters, which was one of the reasons why I requested the book.

I loved that the author gave a new air to the Tudor history and for her to focus on Elizabeth  instead on Henry VIII, it was totally refreshing to read a new perspective. Because when I was studying the Tudors a couple of years ago, everything was centered around how many women  Henry VIII had. One of the things I liked about the book weere the interactions between Meg and Alejandro and I loved to see for once a Spanish being portrayed as an educated and romantic man, because is  Spanish usually appear as the bad boys. I would love to have read something about  the Spanish Inquisition as it is something that marked the history.Religion plays a very important role and it lacked a bit of historical introduction about why they were at "war" Catholics and Protestants.

I'm excited to see what life will be in court because it´s a place full of dangers and mysteries for Meg. And know what will  happen with Marcus Dent. I love reading books that focus on innovative topics instead  of the cliché young adults. So if you want to read something refreshing with hints of mystery and love you should definitely have to read Witchstruck.
I look forward to reading Witchfall, the second book in this trilogy and know more about Meg and Alejandro.

  1. Many thanks for your review! It's very kind of you. I was astonished by the comments about my Spanish though, as I thought it was correct. But no, when I checked, my UK edition has the correct Spanish, but the US edition you read has been changed to Italian by the US editors.

I have no idea why that happened. I am deeply sorry that it spoiled your experience, but I assure you it was correct Spanish in the original British edition of the book!

I will now chase that up before it happens again in book two. All the very best, Victoria Lamb

  2. I have discovered how it happened! An early version of the manuscript had some language mistakes, including these, but they were corrected later as we worked on the book. Sadly, the US edition seems to have been based on this early manuscript, not the corrected one.

This will not be the case with book two though, I assure you. And I am thrilled to have your help with it. These little things can make all the difference between enjoying a book and wanting to throw it across the room! So I'm taking a deep breath and hoping it won't annoy thousands of readers, and that you'll still want to go on and read book two, Witchfall. Many, many thanks, Victoria

    1. Thanks for commenting. And I´m still waiting to read Witchfall cause Alejandro has stolen my heart!
It´s a pity what happened with the mistaken version, let´s hope readers want take it to hard cause Witchfall is a book worth reading and it´s a shame that your hard work ended up like that.
Glad to help, if you have any questions about Spanish for the next books I´ll be happy to help you.
      Thanks, Azahara

  3. Thanks!! I will bear that in mind. :)

By the way, if wanting to read more about the Spanish Inquisition, they are totally all over the next book, Witchfall. The year Witchstruck is set in was the year Philip of Spain came to England to marry Elizabeth's sister, so the Inquisition were not actually around in England much before he married Mary Tudor. But they appear in great detail in Witchfall, as you can imagine! V.
