Sinopsis: Annabel Greene parece la chica perfecta, es popular, guapa, trabaja como modelo... Pero como suele pasar, detrás de las apariencias hay mucho más. Tras un desafortunado evento en una fiesta Annabel pierde a sus amigos, de repente se ve sola. Y en su casa las cosas no van mejor. Tras la imagen de familia perfecta se esconden muchos problemas, muchos secretos, muchas mentiras, aunque todos intenten ocultarlo. Cuando Annabel conoce a Owen, un apasionado de la música con fama de ser un chico violento y del cuál nadie sabe mucho, su forma de ver las cosas empieza a cambiar. Su sinceridad y su forma de sentir la música le hacen ver de una forma distinta todos los problemas a los que últimamente ha tenido que hacer frente.

Opinión: En una primera impresión Just Listen parece una historia más de 'las apariencias engañan'. Pero las apariencias engañan (nunca mejor dicho). En el libro, Sarah Dessen incluye muchos otros temas, destacando claramente (solo hay que leer el título) el de la música. Creo que el libro le gustará a la gente que disfruta la música de verdad ya que de alguna forma te enseña la importancia de escuchar realmente, antes de juzgar. Pero obviamente la música es solo una metáfora. Está muy presente además el tema de la insinceridad, pero un tipo de insinceridad que seguramente toca de cerca a muchos, el hecho de ocultar la verdad para evitar un conflicto, una discusión o una explicación indeseada. La mentira que mucha gente dice al contestar automáticamente bien a la pregunta ¿Qué tal?. Annabel representa esto a la perfección, alrededor de la gente, sobre todo de su familia, dice lo que se espera de ella, hace lo que espera de ella y siempre intenta no causar problemas. Desde fuera es fácil criticar esta actitud pero la verdad es que todos hacemos esto en mayor o menor medida.
  Es verdad que la forma de tratar estos temas está muy bien pero he de decir que la forma de tratar otros no me gustado del todo. Me parece que algunas de las experiencias negativas por las que pasa Annabel se describen de forma muy rápida y superficial, ya que se trata de problemas muy importantes (¡no quiero hacer spoilers!).
  En general el libro es muy interesante ya que te hace pensar sobre todo esto y otras cosas a pesar de parecer una típica historia de una chica de instituto.

EL MEJOR PERSONAJE: Para mí no ha pasado desapercibido un personaje secundario que no aparece demasiado en el libro, Rolly. Rolly es el mejor amigo de Owen, hace el programa de radio con él y trabaja, literalmente, recibiendo golpes de otras personas (en una clase de defensa personal). Me ha encantado el personaje por la perseverancia con la que busca a la misma chica durante todo el libro. Una chica que le pegó un puñetazo una vez y a la que no ha olvidado desde entonces, ya que cree que ella es 'su destino'.

After an unfortunate incident at a party, Annabel looses her friends. She is suddenly alone. And at home things are not better. Despite that image of a perfect family, there are many hidden problems, secrets and lies that everybody is trying to conceal. When Annabel knows Owen, a music lover with a reputation of a violent guy, her way of seeing things starts to change. His honesty and his way of feeling music make
her see the problems she's been facing differently.

Opinion: In a first impression Just Listen looks like another story about deceitful appearances. But appearances ARE deceitful. In the book, Sarah Dessen presents many other themes, standing out the music theme (just read the title). I think it will be the people who really enjoy music that will like this book the most since it somehow teaches you the importance of truly listening before judging. But music is obviously a metaphor. Insincerity is also a major theme. But a kind of insincerity to which most of us can relate, the kind we use to conceal the truth to avoid a conflict, an argument or an undesired explanation. The lie that many people tell when they answer fine to the question how are you?. Annabel portrays this perfectly. Around people,
specially her family, she always says what it's expected, does what it's expected and always tries not to cause trouble. It is easy to crticize that attitude of her but the truth is that we all do this to some extent.
  The way of exposing these themes was very good but I must say that I didn't completely like the way of presenting others. I believe some of the negative experiences that Annabel goes through are described in a very fast and mild way since we are talking about very serious porblems (I don't want to make any spoilers!).
  In general, the book is really interesting; it makes you think about all this and many other things, even if it seems like the typical story of a high school girl.

THE BEST CHARACTER: For me a certain secondary character didn't go unnoticed, even though it doesn't appear much in the book: Rolly. He is Owen's best friend, makes the radio programme with him and works being hit by people, literally (at self-defence lessons). I loved his perseverance on finding this girl that punched him once and he has not forgotten ever since because he thinks she is his destiny.
